Who can join Stima DT SACCO, and how transfers work

Who can join

Stima says membership is open to all resident and non-resident Kenyans. Joining costs a KSh 500 registration fee, and the minimum share capital for an individual is KSh 25,000. Stima can refuse an application.

How transfers work

  • Shares can only go to another Stima member, so a buyer has to join first.
  • Stima must approve and register the transfer. It is not valid until that is done and the fees are paid.
  • Stima can refuse to register a transfer without giving a reason.
  • Stima charges the buyer a KSh 1,000 transfer commission. This is paid to Stima, not to SaccoBid.
  • Stima records shares at their face value (KSh 500 a share), whatever price the buyer and seller agree.
  • While you remain a member you must keep KSh 25,000 worth of shares (KSh 50,000 for corporate members), so you can only sell what you hold above that.
  • Members who have left, and the next of kin of a deceased member, may sell all their shares.
  • A member who has defaulted on a loan may sell, but the money must go towards repaying that loan.
  • Transferring all your shares ends your membership.

What Stima DT SACCO controls

  • Who may join, and whether a buyer meets its membership requirements.
  • Approving and recording every transfer, using its own procedure and paperwork.
  • How long a transfer takes. Across SACCOs, members report anything from same-day to several weeks.
  • Its own fees, which are separate from SaccoBid's.
  • Whether shares can move while they are pledged against a loan. Usually they cannot until the loan is settled.

Common questions

What is the difference between share capital and deposits?

They are not the same thing, and usually only share capital is transferable. Deposits are your savings and normally come back to you when you exit the SACCO — they cannot be sold to someone else. Check which you hold with your SACCO before listing, because it is the most common reason a listing cannot go ahead.

Can I withdraw my share capital?

Usually not while you remain a member. Share capital is your stake in the SACCO, so it normally leaves by being transferred to another member rather than being paid back. Rules differ between SACCOs, so check yours before you list.

Who can buy these shares?

Someone who meets the SACCO's own membership requirements. The SACCO decides who may join and approves every transfer, so check with it before you bid.

How much does it cost to buy?

Nothing to SaccoBid. Buyers pay us nothing at any point — not to browse, not to bid, not to win. The seller pays the entire platform fee. You pay the seller for the shares themselves, in person at the SACCO office, and the SACCO may charge its own membership or transfer fees.

What does a seller pay, and when?

A flat fee set by the band your sale falls into: KSh 500 up to KSh 50,000, KSh 750 to KSh 100,000, KSh 1,000 to KSh 250,000, and KSh 1,500 above that. It is charged once, only after you have chosen a buyer. Listing and verification are free, and if no deal happens you are never charged.

Who do I pay for the shares themselves?

The seller, directly, in person at the SACCO office. Never send money before the SACCO has recorded the transfer in your name. If anyone asks you to send the share price by M-Pesa in advance, stop and message us.

Someone claiming to be SaccoBid asked for my PIN.

That is not us. We never ask for your M-Pesa PIN, and we never ask you to read out or send us a code by call, SMS or WhatsApp. The codes we email you are only ever typed in on saccobid.co.ke. Block them and forward the message to our WhatsApp support so we can warn others.
